Book Review: The Hate U Give

Title: The Hate U give by Angie Thomas
Rep: A black story written by a black female author
Themes: Dealing with different cultural between friends; Black girl dating a white boy when it’s forbidden; Police shooting; Street rules
Rating: 3 out of 5

If your wondering what cover this is, it’s the special collector’s edition that came out. I thought maybe it was Barns & Noble only but I was able to get my copy on Amazon. This edition tends to go out of stock often so if you want it, go for it as soon as you see it’s in stock!

Rating this book is hard. I wasn’t amused by the digs at white people. Such as the joke about popping molly and listening to Britney spears. Drug abuse isn’t a punch line. I didn’t like how her white boyfriend was included in the protesting but as he drove the car, all the kids made fun of him and he wasn’t shot down when trying to defend himself.

I think it has great themes but most white people aren’t raciest and most police officers aren’t either. So, it’s not a bad book but i don’t know if I would call it the best book either.

Would I rec this book? Yes. My complaints seem to be a minority ( Most who are hating on the book are going way over board), and this book isn’t really aimed at me either.

Book Review: Song Of The Dead

Title: Song Of The Dead by Sarah Glenn Marsh
Rep: Bisexuality; Same-Sex marriage
Themes: Love after loss
Rating: 5 out of 5

Song of The Dead is the final book in the two book series with Reign of The Fallen. Odessa thinks things are solved and she can just sail away from all her problems. Both she and Meredy are trying to navigate their confusing emotions about each other.

Of course it’s not that simple, and both return to their home kingdom a mess.

I would have killed for a 3rd book but book 2 does tie up everything nicely. I totally rec this book!

Book review: Reign Of The Fallen

Title: Reign of The Fallen by Sarah Glenn Marsh
Rep: Bisexuality ( Female x Female, where one is out right bisexual); Gay (male x male who later gets married)
Themes: Bisexuality; Turning to drug abuse to handle grief; World building without homophobia being a thing
Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

Odessa can summon the dead and also put them back asleep if needed. We start off with her dating Evander. His death leads her to turn to a sleeping tonix. She slowly falls for his sister Meredy, and her in turn falling for Odessa.

It’s zombies without being zombies at the same time. I really loved that. The magic a person wields is hinted by eye color. Which I loved for how different it was.

I 100% rec this book. We got queer themes, a world without homophobia, ect.

Book Review: The Nowhere Girls

Title: The Nowhere Girls by Amy Reed
Rep: Autism, Same-Sex Attraction, Immigration, and blurry status
Themes: Girls taking on sexual harassment at school that chased out a former student.
Rating: 5 out of 5

We have three girls who start the club, The Nowhere Girls. Grace moves into Lucy’s old house and sees carvings into wood in her bedroom that lead her to ask students at school who Lucy is/was. Rosina who I don’t know if they say out right if she is lesbian or bisexual ( The dust jacket just says Queer and she only dates a girl in the book; Feel free to correct me in the comments if you know for sure if she is Lesbian or Bisexual!). She belongs to a Mexican family where her Grandmother’s legal status is bought up as being possibly in question. Erin makes up the final girl in the main three. She is autistic and it is hinted she may have been raped in another state.

The three of them try to honor Lucy by making a club where girls can come together to vent about what happen to them directly or to a girl they know.

I 100% rec this book. We got both queer themes, great autism rep and nod to issues regarding legal status.

Book Review: Moxie

Book: Moxie by Jennifer Mathieu
Rep: Girl power book
Themes: Issues effecting girls in a high school setting
Rating: 5 out of 5

In the book Vivi tackles boys getting away with anything in high school. We do see some girls fighting other girls as some struggled to see the big deal about what was going on. But nothing too bad, and it was pretty realistic.

I can’t say how true to high school this book is as I haven’t been in high school since 2006 ( Gods I am dating myself now, lol). That aside, I would totally recommend the book. I would have loved for some rep aside from just girl power but thats a minor thing.
